Its been awhile since my last post. Mainly due to the studying and testing I've been compiling on a new camera system. My short lived love of the 4/3 camera system is now gone. In all honesty, it was at a physical size that I was not comfortable with. At this point, any 4/3 and or Micro 4/3 camera system is at a size between any professional DSLR and a small point-and-shoot camera. Though I enjoyed the "rangefinder" esque the little medium sized bodies gave (particularly the Olympus Pen E-P2 I used to own), I soon began thinking that If I was going to be carrying around an interchangeable lens system, I might as well carry around one of my DLSR's. There lies the predicament. I stopped shooting with the 4/3 system for awhile, and researched on my days off what other cameras out there produce the qualities I particularly look for in a camera. High quality RAW files (in a range from low to high ISO), a sensor that has great color range and retains detail in the shadows, and a wide angle lens with the widest aperture settings available. My research landed on the highest quality, most technologically advanced point-and-shoot today - the Leica D-Lux 5.

I sold my Olympus 4/3 system, grabbed the Leica and loved it. Yes it had limitations, as all cameras do, however this was compact (not quite pocketable) though portable and light enough for a true snap shot point-and-shoot camera, but with the quality desirable by most enthusiasts and professionals looking for a street shooting sidekick to add to their arsenal. After a few clicks with the Leica, and upon further investigation, I was struck with reality that it is in-fact the exact same camera as the Panasonic Lumix LX5. The same body, back buttons, software, firmware accessories and both sport the same Leica 24-90mm lens. In-fact, the bottom of the Leica D-Lux 5 said Made in Japan and Manufactured by Panasonic. They are manufactured with the same sensor and internal hardware as well. So, I quickly and simply swapped cameras and saved 400 dollars! I suggest others to do the same. I examined both RAW files (as that is what I shoot) and they were both the same. Nevertheless, this little fella is incredible. I can't believe how far technology has come in these sized sensors. It's astonishing how the little sensors interpret and render the RGB channels. The quality of what DSLR's (utilizing either a CMOS or CCD sensor) used to be a few years ago, are what these micro CCD sensors are today. The LX5 pumps out an almost 30MB RAW file and the detail/sharpness is what you would expect from a Leica Summicron lens. At the price you just simply cannot beat the quality.

All in all, I'm ecstatic with the new camera, and am very much enjoying the street shooting capabilities it has. Today was the first outing with the LX5 (as most shots prior were all test images in comparison with the Leica) and next will be color imagery. I hope to now get back to posting more images on the old Blogger! Cheers!

The Cloisters

The Cloisters, part of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's collection, is a great place when wanting to escape life in the city, and seek some peace of mind. It really is a different world when entering Fort Tryon Park in upper Manhattan, and this gem of a place boasts European landscape and medieval European architecture. The Cloisters overlooks the Hudson River, and within the museum consists of twelfth through fifteenth century art work. It's a perfect place for a weekend retreat.

Eddie Adams Workshop - A Look Back

I’ve been asked to write about my process of selecting the images I used in the portfolio I submitted to the Eddie Adams Workshop and post the full set for interested applicants to see. I am always happy to help others in anyway that I can, as so many great mentors, photographers and photo editors alike, have helped me along the way.

Back in 2007, during my second year at Brooks Institute, I applied to the workshop not fully understanding what it was about. Well thank God I was not accepted, because looking back now, I realize how unprepared my portfolio was, and I laugh at what I thought was good. It clearly showed a student that had no idea what he wanted to be. After I received the denial letter, everything changed. I started a personal journey and exploration of why I wanted to become a photojournalist. To make a long story short, after I began my journey, I noticed a change in my work. Not just technically, but I saw a trend within the images - a personal style emerging.

The following year was a growth spurt in the way I looked at photography, the world and people. My vision changed, and I approached assignments and subjects on a more personal level. I started freelancing locally, took an internship and by the time Barnstorm XXI was open for submission, I had a collection of images I was proud of. So in 2008, during my third year, I applied once again. But this time it was different. I gathered all of the images I took during that year (portraits, features, general news, spot news, photo essays) and approached a few professors and friends for edits. To be honest, that ended up being more confusing than helpful because each one had a different edit. But I realized a similar theme and composition to the images they were choosing. There was a ‘style’ and ‘consistency’ to the body of work. In the end, I chose the images I personally liked the most from the final edits of my professors. I opened with what I thought would be the strongest image, and continued with a set of singles (four) opening the portfolio, and closing with two photo stories that I felt best described my passion.

The best thing you can do for yourself is to ask others for help. Submit work you are proud of, and make sure your portfolio shows your personal vision and style. Some people submit a portfolio that has a theme, but for me I submitted a general portfolio, showcasing features, general news, portraits and two photo stories. There is no right or wrong portfolio to submit. Be sure however, that the images you do submit are collectively the same: Images that have strong content, style and composition. Only submit your best work, and if that is only five images, then so be it. Your worst image will be the only image the reviewers will remember, and you don’t want that. If you don’t get in this year, keep applying. It was one of the most significant career changing moments during my education. I walked out of the workshop with life-long friends and new mentors that have continued to help me today. Best of luck to the applicants!

I recently posted a new project titled "Daehanmin(-)guk" on my website, here. This particular project will be an ongoing one, focused on the ever changing culture throughout South Korea. Because I frequently travel to the country for family visits, I figured this would be a perfect project to focus on for many years to come and I look forward recording as much as possible.

Looking Back At 2010

2010 proved to be a year full of ups & ups (not downs). I will forever remember 2010 as a year of healing, blessing, grace, love, learning, educating, humility, and the list goes on-and-on. Another thing 2010 proved was that life doesn't necessarily take us in the direction we wish it had. In this case, it took my wife and I in a direction that far exceeded our expectations, and for me personally, my career branched into an area I didn't think would ever happen.

I’ve always had the personality of being open. Meaning, I've always been open to change, and have welcomed it. Certain change can truly suck, but 2010 was a change that was full of awesome surprises both with career and relationships (family, friends, marriage).

In the past, I’d try to navigate my way through life on my own. I would live in the future, rather than knowing the now. It's important to live day by day, because things happen all the time around us, and we need to be aware of possible doors that could open and lead us in a direction that we never expected. Living in the future with goals that we set for ourselves 10 years ago, can at times stagnate life. If you live in the future, you will miss the many amazing experiences happening around you right now. In 2011, I plan to be open and willing to accept change, and "go with the flow" as some would say. However, I don't follow my path or the paths of others, rather God's will for my life. I've learned the hard way in years past, and if there is one thing I've learned, it's that my plans can lead me in the wrong direction.

When I look at my colleagues and friends that I've graduated with, I'm proud to say that I'm a photo editor and photojournalist. Why? Because it's an honor to be amongst a group of really stand up folks that yearn to make this industry thrive and to keep evolving with the inevitable change in front of us today. This industry is full of the most creative people I've ever known, and have known of. People that change the view of the world, people that make others aware of atrocities currently happening, documenting local and international disasters, and also capturing life's pleasant moments that make even the most hard hearted pause for a moment to admire Mother Natures beauty and humans quirkiness. Again, I could go on about how awesome everyone is, and how incredible their works are, but that is another post for another day.

Each year is radically different for most journalists. Each year brings change (hopefully good) to everyone. May 2011 bring good change to all, and may everyone have a humble, open heart that would be willing to accept that change.... because that road less travelled is a road that could bring many blessings your way. Cheers.

It’s been awhile since my last post. To be honest, I haven't had much time to focus on updating my blog. While I still shoot as much as I can on my days off, I've been out of the habit from doing posts. These days I've been very focused on editing and experiencing everyday life without *gasp*...a camera in hand. It's refreshing.

A Guardian Angels Update

Back in 2007 I started documenting the Guardian Angels in California. I started with the Ventura County chapter, and later migrated south to cover the Los Angeles and San Diego chapters. I eventually made my way up North to cover the San Jose, Oakland and San Francisco chapters. Now that I am living in New York, I've been covering various chapters in Harlem, Lower Manhattan, the Bronx, Brooklyn and have since been covering the Atlantic City chapter.

Over the years, I've been trying to fill in the holes with content that is missing. It has proven much more challenging than I anticipated. So as of late, I put the story on hold, as I focus on my position at Getty. I didn't realize how much I needed a breather, in order for me to clear my head from the obsession I had on finishing the project. I've for so long wanted to force the story to come to an end, but I confronted myself that good stories are not forced, nor rushed. Patience is a huge part in this industry, and sometimes it takes awhile for an event to happen, an event that is needed to complete a story. If anyone is stuck on story, and if there is one thing that I could encourage you as a photographer to practice, is patience...

A Look Back: The beginnings of the 4/3 project launched in S. Korea. Since then, I've focused on Japan and New York. Mainly, the format is what I'm exploring most. It's a different way to look at life, and so what better way to start viewing life in a new way then in South Korea. The first post to this project starts here. The project has focused on other places such as Japan (Kyoto and Tokyo) and New York City, all of which can be found in the archives on this blog. Soon, I plan to gather the images together and caption/keyword them all in preparation for stock. That's never the fun part, but one of the more necessary steps in the business. More to come...

I haven't picked up the 5D in awhile. I just can't get enough of the Olympus E-P2. Like I said before, the files are really beautiful (not just in B&W) and I'm really happy with the large format prints as well as the files being used for stock. The physicality of the body is beautiful, and the lens choice options are great.

A dream camera would be the Leica M9. The image quality is unreal. Worth the price? Eh, that's debatable. For now, the E-P2 and its micro 4/3's system only continues to get better and better. And I've been more than happy with the lenses available (Especially Panasonic's Lumix/Leica lenses available for the system) because the quality is on par and in some cases even surpasses the quality of my Canon lenses.

I've been back in New York for a week now, and started a new job at Getty Images. It’s been busy getting the hang of the new and intense schedule, but so rewarding in many ways. More to come...

While traveling through S. Korea and Japan, I mostly shot in B&W. I did shoot in color, just not as much during this trip. Most of my archive on S. Korea is in color, in fact, almost everything I photograph and post on my website is in color. Not sure why I never got into B&W photography, but after getting a new toy, I've enjoyed shooting B&W quite a lot. With that said, below are a few shots in color from the trip...

My wife and I had a great time visiting Japan and South Korea the last few weeks. Seeing her family is always a treat as well. Now back in NYC and taking the next few days to relax, unwind, unpack and to mentally prepared for the new gig I start next week.

Part of that relaxation is editing through many photos I took throughout the country. As always, this blog is sort of a representation of my brain visually thinking of a final edit I would later post on my website. Some I feel are good enough to post on the blog, but may never be submitted for stock nor uploaded to my website. This blog has been a great tool in the process of editing my own work, and I have always enjoyed the feedback received because it helps tremendously in the editing process. More to come…

4/3 - eight : Seoul, S. Korea (three)

Today is a day of packing and getting mentally prepared to head back to NYC. It was a fun break the wifey and I had - exploring Tokyo and Kyoto, and coming back to Seoul to visit the family again. It's always nice being able to see the family, especially for Michelle since she doesn't often get to see them and she gets a little home sick from time to time.

I love Seoul, because it is always changing and every time we visit, places we were at prior have changed so much. So in a way, it has become a mission of mine to photograph as much as I can each time I come, because some places in the images will never look that way again. It reminds me of the duty we as photojournalists have; to record what we see in front of us for remembrance. It goes beyond stock sales, and even leisure. It's a must that photojournalists embrace the power of the camera - a tool to record the present and give it a voice when it becomes part of history. The still image lives forever in a timeless moment, and it is always an honor to be a part of the industry that helps to record life.

If I could tell the story in words, I wouldn't need to lug around a camera.

4/3 - seven : Seoul, S. Korea (two)

Coming back to Seoul, S. Korea was welcoming - from the family and people of Seoul. I really find this city interesting, because it seems that the city has and still is birthing into a western civilization. Whether that be a good thing or not, that’s another topic of discussion. Back in the city, the people were honoring the death of late President Roh Moo-Hyun who took his own life May 23rd of last year. While that was going on, trucks playing loud music with dancers on the street continued as they enticed the locals for their vote of a government official, as well as the announcement of Seoul accusing Pyongyang of firing a torpedo at the warship Cheonan in March. It was a complex, dizzying array of sorrow, and cheerfulness all combined from one block to the next. Next up, we’re heading down south again to explore the countryside. I look forward to that.

After two days in Kyoto, it was back to Seoul. Leaving the amazing city was hard, only because we wanted to see so much more of the place. We knocked down quite a few sites from a list of things to do and see, however the other parts of Kyoto we wanted to see were hidden from casual view. Away from the tourist traps lay incredible amounts of history for people to see, however, the best sites are unfortunately on the heavily beaten path. There really is no way of escaping that reality in Kyoto, though, with patience and time, more hidden treasures can be found...

After taking the bullet train down from our two-day stay in Tokyo, we embarked on another massively planned tour of Kyoto. Michelle and I busted out the map, marked the sites we wanted to see the most, and set forth on another two-day adventure throughout Kyoto. The city is definitely the stage on which much of Japanese history was played out. Today, Kyoto is one of the world’s most culturally rich cities.

It was my second time visiting Kyoto, and it was as breath taking as the first. I still would like to stay for a few weeks to really see the hidden treasures Kyoto has to offer - away from the beaten path.

4/3 - four : Tokyo, Japan (two)

Our last day in Tokyo was adventurous. Sightseeing just about every major attraction within a time slot of 9 hours was physically draining. Michelle and I walked so much, that it became our mission to finish all the sites on our list before we headed to Kyoto. Coming from NYC, we quickly became familiar with the subway system, and used that to our advantage. Next time however, I'm bringing better walking shoes.

When exploring another country, I always look for the contrasts the city or town has with its modern and traditional side. In Tokyo, it is becoming harder to see the old traditional side, unless it is for tourists. Nevertheless, old tradition still exists.

Tokyo is truly a well-oiled machine, and it was fun being a part of it, but we were ready for Kyoto…

4/3 - three : Tokyo, Japan (one)

Taking a walk through the streets of Tokyo can be challenging, overwhelming and dizzying. Massive amounts of people crowd the streets, alleyways and every store you walk into. Both woman and men, boys and girls, are all trendsetters with their hip and classy fashion. Definitely giving New Yorkers a run for their money. There is so much more to the city that I hope to one day discover. For now, it was a fun two day trip sightseeing the hot spots with Michelle before taking the bullet train down to Kyoto. We didn't have much time in either location, but we first set forth covering much of the popular locations within Tokyo. We had a blast in the city, and wouldn't mind going back for an extended period of time to lay low with the locals.

Micro Four Thirds rock. I've recently obtained the Olympus Pen E-P2, and let me tell you, the files are fantastic. The E-P2 is the same body as there film camera from 1966, so it has a really cool vintage look to it. Also, it takes beautiful HD video and with the option of different mics, it makes for the perfect multimedia companion. I'm very picky with digital rangefinder cameras, and I never opted to buy one because I was never comfortable with the files produced and the overall controls. I'm leaving out the Leica M9 of course, because that digital rangefinder is in a class all of its own. But the Pen E-P2 proved to handle the way I was hoping, and the files are so good, I will be able to use them for stock and personal work.

In my previous blog post, I mentioned that Monday (10th) will be my last day at AOL, and about the new opportunity that will start June 1st. So, from here on out I plan to continue focusing only on personal photographic projects. More updates about that later...For now though, Michelle and I will be taking a break from NYC, and heading to Seoul and later up to Tokyo and Kyoto. I'm excited to be going back to Japan because it was by far one of the coolest countries I have ever been. More posts from the road to come...

New York City has been an incredible place to live. Partially because the vastness of culture, architecture and historical sites that make what it is today. I've never taken for granted any experience encountered here in the city, and I hope to give back as much as I've gained.

Starting June 1st, a new chapter in my life will start. I'll take on another role as picture desk editor, this time at the global picture desk at Getty Images. I'm super excited (!!!) to be around my Barnstorm XXI mentors again, and to be working amongst other amazing editors. It has been a dream to be a part of the Getty team, and I thank God for the opportunity. AOL has been an amazing place to work, and I learned a great deal from the talented photo editors there, but life moves on and opportunities arise. When they do, I take hold and go for the ride...

Guardian Angels Update

On Feb. 8th 2008, I took my first shot of the Guardian Angels – Ventura, CA chapter – on one of their first patrols in the city. Today, as I continue to follow them and cover the chapters in different states, crossing my fingers and hoping to get the ONE shot I need the most; I would wager my savings that I have the largest collection of images of the Guardian Angels, in the world. Seriously. Still to this day, I go on patrols at least once a week. These days however, I rarely take any images, because at this point I have almost every angle, close-up, environmental image you could possibly imagine. Want it during daytime? Got it. What about the GA in a church? Got it. What about the GA confiscating drugs? Got it. What about the GA opening up new chapters in cities? Got it. What about….hey, don’t worry I got it.

There is however, just one image I have been waiting for, and it has been driving me crazy! I have been waiting ever so patiently for them to bust someone. There have been very close moments, but never anything that erupted into a full-fledged battle scene. I feel that this image is needed, because it is part of what they do. I have everything, from helping and assisting the community to things they do with each other, privately. It always seems though, that when I don't go on a patrol, something happens. I hear of the ‘war stories' that happened from the previous week, and I get so frustrated because I have been waiting for 2 years now to get that shot. But whenever that day finally does come, I will be ready. I have felt like giving up so many times, but for some reason I keep going on patrols with them, hoping to get the one shot I need to finish the story.

Goodbye Bryant Park

It was my first and last time covering Fashion Week in Bryant Park. The week marked an end of an era for top fashion designers showcasing their work in the 8-acre park, under the iconic 12,000 sq ft tents. After 17-years of being the official home of New York Fashion Week, the show will be heading uptown to Lincoln Center’s Damrosch Park. I look forward to covering upcoming seasons at the new location.

Vigil for Haiti

On Friday the 29th, I covered a bit of the Haitian community and their supporters, candlelight march across the Brooklyn Bridge. They honored the memory of the over 200,000 estimated dead and showed solidarity with those who are injured and who lost their family members and homes in the devastating Jan. 12, 2010 earthquake in Haiti. McNeil for Smithsonian Magazine

A little while back I photographed activist Joseph Alfred McNeil, an important figure in U.S. civil rights history, for the Smithsonian Magazine. He was one of the original four that took part in the 1960 sit-in at an F.W. Woolworth lunch counter in Greensboro, North Carolina that only served “whites.” He's a humble and inspiring man. It was a blessing to have met him.

From his bio:
"A Wilmington native, he graduated from Williston Senior High School. McNeil earned a degree in engineering physics from North Carolina A&T State University in 1963. His roommate at Scott Hall on the A&T campus was another sit-in participant, Ezell Blair Jr. McNeil spent six years as a U.S. Air Force officer and attained the rank of captain. He is now a major general in the Air Force Reserves. He worked in computer sales for IBM, as a commercial banker for Bankers Trust in New York City, and as a stock broker for E.F. Hutton in Fayetteville. He now resides in Hempstead, N.Y. He is married to the former Ina Brown, and they have five children."

Last Sunday I had an assignment covering retired NBA star Luther Wright from Linden, NJ. Wrights story and testimony is incredible. He went from playing for the Utah Jazz, to living on the streets. Wright is now back on his feet after finding a path through spirituality. He now lives his life day to day trying to stay off drugs and helping others who are going through similar situations. It was a blessing and honor spending the morning with him. You can read the remarkable story here.

I wish I could keep up with updating this blog, however to be frank, I can't. These days there are one-to-many things going on. Besides working at AOL News, I am also freelancing. Therefore most of my time away from the office I spend marketing. Sometime in December, something great will be happening. It's part of my marketing strategy that I'm very excited about it, and I will announce it here.

New York has been such a difficult community breaking into. It's so competitive here, unlike any other location I have ever lived. With that said, this city and the large community of photographers here, have pushed me to continue shooting and developing stories. Currently, I am working on three stories. Two are almost finished. In the future, I don't think I will take on so many personal photographic stories because it's far to difficult being able to focus on just one. I hope to be complete with at least two by next month. For now, below are images from some assignments and occasional personal stock work.

Its been awhile since I have posted on my personal project - |lā′ərs| of ny. Below are some additions to the set and of course, nothing is edited. The images are just the best from each day of the week.

Besides continuing this personal project, I have been trying to finish another project I've been working on for over a year now, about the Guardian Angels. It's been a daunting task because I've been waiting for one picture to happen for over 6-months now. Yes, just one picture. What that is I will not say, but for those of you that have snuck a peak of my work, you know what I am talking about.

I try to shoot as much as I can throughout the week, but I've also been working on the picture desk at AOL News. Great things are happening, and I am excited to be part of the team. I really enjoy photo editing, but photography is still my love. However, I enjoy having a foot in both worlds. More to come...

A Day at Coney Island

Its been awhile since I’ve shot in B&W, about a year actually. I have been shooting B&W film recently, which made me so thankful for digital because of the cost involved. It’s really a different look and feel, and it sure is fun, but sometimes I need to tell myself to stop shooting the film camera like it is a digital camera! The images in this post are not film, rather digital and converted into B&W. I would very much like to scan some images and upload one day. That will be another project for another day.

These days, I’m working at AOL News on the picture desk. It’s part time, which is fantastic, because it allows me to continue working on personal projects and freelancing. It’s the best of both worlds! And speaking of personal projects, I would like to start doing some more while I am still in NY. Even though we will probably be here for a couple more years, that time will pass by very fast. Take all the moments and time you have now to start and finish personal projects. The last couple of weeks have been very good. My wife and I moved out of East Harlem and onto Roosevelt Island. It’s a nice 5-minute sky tram, or subway stop away from Manhattan. The view is incredible, and the location is quiet and safe. Our last place in Harlem was terrible. I guess it’s a common story when someone new moves to NY. People tend to get a hole in the wall apartment, or bad location for the first time. We were just sick of all the drive-bys and gun fights behind our apartment, not to mention having 3 drunken men trying to break into our home, while we were watching a movie! Crazy…

Freelancing has picked up, so that is also a plus. I’ve also started a new venture with AOL News. I’ll be working on the picture desk, something very similar to my last gig with TIME Asia. AOL News is heading in a new direction, and is doing some incredible things. So I’m stoked to be on board. I hope to continue posting here on a regular basis, however the busyness of my life was just turned up a few notches. I’ll try to keep up! More to come…

9/11 - Floating Lanterns

9/11/09 - 8 years later - A traditional Japanese ceremony took place at pier 40, where people came to write notes to those they lost in the 9/11 attacks. Faces of those who died were also on the lanterns. As the evening approached, people said their prayers, and lit the lanterns and proceeded to float them down the Hudson River. Fortunately the rain stopped long enough for the people to float their lanterns. I just wish it wasn't a cloudy day so that I could have seen the two light beams where the WTC once stood.

9/11 - 2,993 people, including the hijackers, died in the attacks. Most were civilians, including nationals of over 90 countries. Do you remember where you were when this tragedy took place?

Back to shooting more for my personal project |lā ərs| of ny, I visited some new places in the city that blew me away. First, I must say that Coney Island is by far one of the strangest places I've ever been to. The people all around are such characters, and along with the style of dress it is something you would see in a movie. I was expecting it to remind me of Venice Beach in California, but no way, it is totally different. A different kind of beast.

Exploring these new areas for the first time with my wife and mom was totally cool. Since I usually prefer to explore alone, so I can concentrate on shooting, but it was great going around with the family. Oh, and we're moving from East Harlem to a little island between Manhattan, and Queens called Roosevelt Island. I love big cities, but I also like to retreat to a nice quiet place to focus and think. Plus, the fact that gun fights have been going on behind our apartment the last few days have put us on high alert. And that's no fun.

The pics below are some for the collection. After all is said and done with this project, I'd like to focus on something else. What? I'm not sure. Currently, besides this project, I'm finishing up with my long overdue story on the Guardian Angels. I'm praying I can finish that soon. More to come...

A witness through the lens: Seeing the old and young pass by, shirtless Puerto Rican men with several gold chains around their necks, African hawkers, Middle Eastern teens by the Crown Fried chicken joint. Seeing the mexican taco stands, and the lady selling high heals on the sidewalk. A mexican woman parting with tiny turtles for a buck. Black taxis. Red Berets. Michael Jackson memorial, the projects, Louis Vuitton and Prada - cheap. I'm a watcher...

A sense of smell: Perfume hawkers, dirty dogs and cats, old wet carpeting, neighbors, foods from around the world. Unserviced subway cars, dying rats next to rotten half eaten tomatoes. Macau S.A.R.

Macau is one of the two special administrative regions of the People's Republic of China. It is one of the richest cities in the world because of the industries within the territory. Though you would not really assume that while touring the area. Macau was the first European colony in China. Settling in the 16th century, the Portuguese administered the region until the handover on December 20, 1999. Today it has a thriving tourism industry, as well as it being the highest-volume gambling centre in the world. Continuing my personal project C.O.A.C., or Characteristics of a Country, it is the second territory I have covered since I began the project in 2008 when I started documenting South Korea. Today, I am starting the final edit for Hong Kong, and I look forward to posting another C.O.A.C. project here soon. More to come...

Another week goes by, another post and more adventures. It has been such a crazy, busy past few days. The last two weeks Ed Ou and Daryl Peveto (both amazing photographers) crashed at my place. Both were on the mission of meeting with editors and showing their work. I myself have been trying to meet with as many editors as possible too. Now it is time for me to switch up my portfolio a bit, to start seeking out different kinds of clients. I will say however, that the photo editors I was able to meet with went well, and I hope to soon be doing some work for them. I wish both Ed and Daryl the best as well.

This market is difficult for any photographer right now. With as many editors I have met, and spoke to about this topic of "Journalism dying" all have had very similar things to say about the direction journalism and more specifically, photo journalism is heading. There will always be a need for professional photography, and documenting life with still images as well as video. We're not only in a recession (which is hopefully bottoming out soon) but journalism is in a time of transition. It's like a double whammy for us, photographers that are looking for work. And for me, graduating a few months ago in this time of change, has been rather difficult. But I have been fortunate to still be picking up clients here in New York, thanks be to God. I wish all the photographers that still have a love of their craft, the best.

Besides the almost daily self-marketing and establishing contacts with potential clients, it has been a time of re-self-discovery for me. So many good and bad things have happened in the last few months following my internship with TIME Asia, that it has made my head wonder and think "where to go, and what to do." Those answers come only after seeking direction from God. My faith has never been a walk on easy street, but whenever I try to figure life out on my own, I end up lost and in rut. I just hope to walk out of this period of transition with a camera in one hand. More to come...

Strolling through my neighborhood, which is located dead smack in the middle of Spanish Harlem, are some sights to behold. There are characters around every corner, and always something new is happening. The smells of amazing Mexican foods fill the air during the mornings and afternoons. But at night, some of the nastiest, instant gag-refluxing smells known to man somehow and from somewhere appear from no where. Strange. It has been really neat exploring my neighborhood. But every so often we escape our hood to check out the ritzier, more posh places as well. The city is endless. It never ceases to amaze me.

With so much culture all around, it's hard to focus on one thing or topic to photograph. I want to shoot it all at the same time! So I figured I will do just that, and later focus on something more specific. So with continuing my project, below are some more to add to the set. I'm excited to see what the future brings, or what I can find. Cheers.

It feels great being back in the US. The transition was much easier going from one big city to the next, however I’m definitely not used to the New York lifestyle, something I may never be accustomed too. Nevertheless, the city and the people that live amongst, have so much energy that it's easy to be creatively inspired.

A personal project that I started a year ago called C.O.A.C (Characteristics of a Country) began in South Korea when I started gathering a large collection of images. What started as a single lined project with South Korea, soon ballooned into a project that could be applied throughout my lifetime. After spending time in South Korea and exploring the land, the next stop was Hong Kong. Continuing the C.O.A.C series, I started to document the country in early 09'. I spent six months exploring the land and people when not working at TIME Asia. Today, the project continues, but this time under a new title. "|lā′ərs| of ny." The great thing about C.O.A.C is that the title can evolve, and it's never limited to one country. In continuing the new project |lā′ərs| of ny, below are a few of the many more images to come. New York is without a doubt - unparalleled. The city is a melting pot of different culture; adding so much color and flavor to the place, it can be one of the most enjoyable, exhilarating, and exhausting cities in the world. Compared to other places I've lived, there is a sense of pride amongst the New Yorkers, unlike anything I have ever felt or seen. When you walk down the street, ride the subways, take the taxis, meet new people or stop for rests at scenic parks and beaches, you soon notice that New York is a living, breathing concrete jungle. It's a bit overwhelming because things change in a flash, or rather "in a New York minute." There are so many things to see and do in NY, that it makes a perfect city and state to document all the changes. Hence the title of my new personal project.

With so much depth and layers to visually peel, my desire is to capture the changes. I'll continue to post here with updates to the project, as well as with other visual material as it arises. After a big set back with the incident that happened in Hong Kong, my body is healing up and is ready for more action! I would again like to thank all my family, friends and amazing colleagues for all the help and support. I couldn't ask or dream for a better circle of people in my life. C.O.A.C. - sixteen

Well folks, this will be my last and final post of my C.O.A.C. series (Characteristics of a Country) on Hong Kong. After 7 months of living in the city, I witnessed the ups and downs of the daily beat. A fast paced and vibrant environment, the little territory is back to being larger than it's size. With over 7 million people huddled on only 10% of the 1100 sq km (426 sq miles) of territory, it can get quite claustrophobic for outsiders who are not used to constantly bumping shoulders with the massive crowds. After 10 years from its handover from Britain to China, the city is booming once again. It was a pleasure to live amongst the locals, surrounded by delights of modern living webbed with historic tradition.

Through my personal project, I was able to cover the four parts of Hong Kong, which are: Hong Kong Island, Kowloon Peninsula, the New Territories, and the outlying islands. I was also able to cover most of the districts as well. It was a pleasurable learning experience, and I was blessed to have witnessed and be a part of a country and culture as dynamic a place.

What started as a temporary move to HK for an internship with TIME Asia, turned into a desire to continue to live and work in the city. Sometimes though, us humans can be blinded, and cruel. As some already know, and as I mentioned in a previous post, I was physically assaulted near to my home. What was a desire to launch my career there soon turned into a tragedy. A bittersweet one I must say. Quite simply, it was my time to leave. Now that I’m living in New York, I will soon start a new chapter in my life. I have high hopes for chapter 28. But now I will focus on making the most of the final phrases and paragraphs. I look forward to seeing what the next chapter brings. When I find out, I will of course share here on my blog. For now, it's good bye Hong Kong, and hello New York…

When I look back on the time I spent living in HK, it all seems a little surreal. While browsing through all the images I took, it's as though it was all a dream. I had some good times and bad times in the city. But all in all, I'm very happy to have experienced what life is like to live and work in one of the most densely populated places on earth.

I am now living in NYC. The future seems very pleasing, and so far the city has been a great place to photograph. New York is a very interesting place, and I'm excited to get to know the area a lot more. I will of course be posting all my recent work on my blog. C.O.A.C. - fourteen

Although I am no longer living and working in Hong Kong, I will continue to post images over the next couple of weeks. My last post notified what happened to me in Hong Kong while walking home. For those that did not hear, I was attacked by a group of immigrants at a Circle K store. I have since moved to New York, to seek further medical treatment, and to start a new chapter in my life. I've gone through so many chapters; my life's novel seems a bit ridiculous whenever I look back at my past. I can only keep my eyes focused on each day. Not the past, nor the future. Today is a new chapter in my life, and I hope and pray the events rolling in will be adventurous, fun, and pain free! I look forward to sharing my future experiences here on my blog, and to continue documenting my life and what I see. More to come...

Savages

Tuesday night at 11:30pm I was jumped by a group of immigrants near to my home. I was beaten pretty badly, causing enough damage that I needed Oral Maxillofacial Surgery. Why they would do this is beyond me, it was just plain evil. I'm sore, but alive and thankful for all of those that have supported me through this traumatic experience. I'm truly grateful for everyone that offered me up in prayers, and for those that contacted the US Embassy. I really hope that the attackers will be caught!

For now, I'm down and out. Healing, resting and hopefully I will be back to normal soon. My phone was stolen as well, so I have a new number posted on my 'about' section. I'm using my old phone, so it shuts on and off randomly. So my apologies if I miss any calls! Again, I cant say THANK YOU enough to everyone who responded. C.O.A.C. - thirteen

As the days pass and the starting of my next internship gets closer, I continue to find new places, people and things to photograph in Hong Kong. Honestly, I question if I will ever get to all the places in HK I would like to see and document. So far, it has been a really fantastic country to photograph, and I try to really give the places justice of how I see it - with a twist of course.

Lately, I have been so tired because of the weather. Everyday is incredibly hot and humid. Obviously the two worst combinations for any soul! To top it off, it has been cloudy and very rainy with few sunny days. It's hard to leave my air-conditioned apartment to roam the streets, let alone to travel East towards the boarder of China. Now that is pushing it my friends. This past weekend I went to Lau Fau Shan (close to China) again, and oh boy, I was so sweaty even my jeans were dripping. It was disgusting! Nevertheless, as a photographer, 'you have to do what you have to do' in order to get the images. Right?! I just hope my body will soon adjust. More to come...

Tiananmen Vigil

June 4th, 2009 marked the 20th anniversary of the 1989 Tiananmnen square massacre. As Chinese officials cracked down on social networking sites and closed the square in Beijing, Hong Kong had a record turn out of people that lit candles and honored those that died. Today, Hong Kong is the only legal place in China to hold such an event, and it's estimated over 150,000 people participated at the event held at Victoria Park.

C.O.A.C. - twelve

I'm back in the city where East meets West. A cultural blend of Chinese and British influences, all stirred together in one pot. In this case, a big shiny city. There is always something quirky happening, a new site to see everywhere you look, as well as construction happening 24/7. No matter where you go or where you look, there is some type of construction or building repair happening. Even the building across from me is doing outside touch up work to their windows. The noises can be horribly exhausting sometimes!

As I sit in limbo, waiting for my training visa to be approved so I can start my next internship at SCMP, I continue to explore new areas of the country I have never seen before. Eventually, I would like to visit and cover each town, city, beach and island in Hong Kong. Just so I can make my C.O.A.C. project truly complete. Below are some little features since I got back. C.O.A.C. - eleven

What is C.O.A.C.? This is one of my personal projects that I continuously work on whenever I go to other countries. C.O.A.C. stands for Characteristics of a Country. I try to capture the way I see the city/country/people/culture in hopes that I can represent what the country is about. Currently I am documenting Hong Kong. I have been living in Hong Kong for a little over 4 months. As I write this, I am back in the US making a big move to re-locate to Hong Kong to continue working on this personal project and to start a new adventure with the South China Morning Post. I finished my AMAZING picture editing internship at TIME Asia, and I decided to try to see what other opportunities exist in Hong Kong. This time I will be an intern photographer for the Post. I'm very excited to start shooting daily assignments again, and I look forward to getting involved with the local community as much as possible and hopefully I can squeeze out some nice stories for the paper.

I hope I am not alone when saying I think everyday about the bad timing it was to graduate in a recession! The journalism industry has been on a decline even before the recession, or at least in a period of adapting to the internet and multimedia/video. Now to top it off, the recession has caused media giants to do some restructuring, i.e. layoffs. Graduates are lucky to be getting internships these days! Budgets have been slashed even for those, and how many college students or graduates like me can afford to do an unpaid internship? Internships are a MUST for college students and for those that are trying to gain more experience in different areas of journalism, like me. The lack of internships available today makes for incredibly stiff competition. You have to be good, real good. So for this up-coming summer of internships, I say to all those that have secured one, congratulations! Soak it up, and see you on the flip side.

Interning at TIME Asia has given me great insight as to how the journalism industry operates. Seeing thousands of photos a day can be a daunting task, just in search of that one, or two, or three images that will tell the story the best. After awhile, you start learn what makes a good photo and why. Challenges like this are a daily occurrence at the office, all of which I really enjoy. There is a creative part to picture editing as well. Taking the photograph is only the beginning. As a photographer, I have been most thankful to witness and be part of the picture editing process, so that I can hopefully one day, take my own photography up a notch. I just don't want it to end....

Speaking of photographers, my co-worker and intern in crime, Sheila Zhao is also a photographer that is learning the ropes of picture editing. To see her work, check out her website which is listed on my 'friends & mentor' list.

The images below are from daily walks throughout the city and countryside. My next challenge is to see what the mountains are like. Mountains, in Hong Kong? Hmm.....

With 3 weeks left at Time, preparations for the big move to New York have already been underway. From apartment hunting to seeking out jobs/freelance gigs, it has only added to the never-ending list of 'things to do'.

Lately, I’ve been tied down with work and captioning/keywording images for stock submission. So finding any time to venture out into the streets has been very limited. I hope to find some time to do at least another picture story before I leave. I have a few ideas, but again, it’s finding that precious ‘time’. More to come…

It has been so great working at TIME. I've learned so much, and I feel there's still so much to learn. Photo editing was never something I envisioned doing for an internship, let alone as part of my career, but it has become a rewarding one that I have grown to love! After the internship is over, It's good bye Hong Kong and hello New York.

Update: I've recently teamed with Aurora Photos and Select. My images will finally find a new home for stock. Working with Select will be great as well, since it will be an additional source of inspiration to complete old and current projects as well as find new ones. I'm exited to see what lies ahead with this never ending adventure...

As a former Portuguese colony, Macau has retained many of the old Catholic traditions and festivals including the Procession of the Passion of Our Lord. The solemn procession is part and parcel of the cultural fabric of Macau. It is the celebration of long standing influence by the missionaries in and around Macau. Japanese and Vietnamese Christians who came to Macau to escape prosecutions by religious fanatics in their country started the Procession. The deposits of sacred mortal remains of many missionaries in Macau add to the solemnity of the festival. Today, there are some 10 million Catholics in China, divided between an “underground” church and the state-approved church that rejects effective papal control.

On the festive day, a figure of Christ carrying the Cross is taken in a formal procession from St. Augustine’s Church to the Macau Cathedral for an overnight vigil. The next day, several devotees dressed in magenta-robes escort the image through the city along the procession route and pause for the stations of the cross, designating the tragic events which took place from the condemnation of Christ to the placing of the body in the tomb after his death on the Cross.

Update: A little less than 2 months left to go at Time. It's been an eye opening experience thus far, and a crash course on learning how the journalism industry operates. Since the internship has been a photo editing internship, I haven't had much time to get out and shoot. Therefore, I shoot whenever opportunities exist- such as going to work, coming home from work, and on the weekends.

Speaking of weekends, I recently had quite the adventure. I went to Macau to cover an old Catholic ceremony called the 'The Procession of the Passion of our Lord'. The community gathered together and carried a statue of Christ through the streets from one Cathedral to another. It was a unique setting and opportunity for some very cool snaps. I'm currently working on an edit, so stay tuned for another update soon!

Wow, I'm almost done with school! I will be 100% finished at Brooks on Feb. 28th. I can't believe it. Sometimes it feels that it all went by so fast, and other times (like writing this post) it feels like it took forever to get to this point. All in all, I must say that my life has just been an incredible adventure. Ups and downs, with many twists and turns in the road. I never expected to end up where I am at today, as a photojournalist. I never was really good in anything else but the arts. Photography was both a mechanical/technical interest as was producing images that has the potential to tell stories. Both I love. Photography and its form of communication is all I know, and its what I do best. With the changes in the industry, I can only push myself to adapt and seek new opportunities within. The internship with Time has given me tremendous insight in those 'other' opportunities. Just being involved in the journalism industry would be an honor to be a part of. Documenting history, telling stories that inform others, and being a part of getting the images seen both on web or print is something that I get excited about each morning. Nevertheless, it is hard these days to find any positions, especially the way the world economy is today. Job Layoffs and a high volume of photojournalist students graduating every few months around the world all lead to incredibly stiff competition. Up until this very day, writing this blog, I have followed what God has wanted me to do. I trust and have faith that there is a reason why I'm still continuing down this path. My love of this industry is irrelevant if what I do has no impact on people, or even one single person in this world. I can only believe that in the future, what I do will have impact on others. I will continue pursuing this path, giving it my all in every aspect with the purpose of fulfilling the very definition of photojournalism.

An internship update: Everything continues to remain absolutely awesome. I've said it before, and I'll say it again, editors have a rewarding job and I have the utmost respect for what they do. It's intense, challenging but very rewarding being part of the storytelling process. It rocks!

Below are some more snaps. I'm really trying to discover more of Hong Kong, and I feel like I'm starting to get a hang of the city life here. Two things I am looking forward to this upcoming weekend. A good buddy of mine from the Eddie Adams workshop, Stefen Chow, is coming to HK for a visit. Also, I'll be traveling to Macau again to do a photo story on the 'Procession of the Passion of Our Lord' event. It's a 21 hour event that seems to be pretty incredible. Google it if your interested in learning more about it. I think there is major potential for some awesome visuals. More to come....Cheers!

For the last week I haven't found anytime to get out during the day and explore more of Hong Kong. I've been focused on learning and working as much as I can from the editors at TIME. Which by the way, has proven to be more than I ever expected. The internship has given me tremendous insight on the process of photo editing, and guess what, I really like it...

So after a long day at work, the commute home treats me to some new sights each evening. Everyone throughout the week seems to be others commuting home as well. Yawny sleepy eyed businessmen and women, nice reflections in the back alleys after the restaurants clean their kitchens, and other little tokens that one may take for granted. The night remains the most interesting time for me to shoot, and something I look forward to each day.

What a busy week its been. From a trip to Macau, a pro-palestinian peace protest, the worst record of air pollution in Hong Kong, to one of many Chinese New Year celebrations to come. The last week has felt like a month. With that said, I'm excited to see what next week brings.

Its been great exploring the land and seeing new things each day. I've been trying to get out as much as possible, just so I can immerse myself into the culture as much as possible. Hong Kong has proven to be a city full of surprises, loud noises, unfamiliar foods and food stands wedged between skyscrapers. There is literally two worlds in one.

I've been thinking of a long-term project to focus on, and I've come to a decision. C.O.A.C stands for Characteristics Of A Country, and when I travel to other countries, I, like many other photographers look for interesting moments, architecture, spaces, shapes and geometry. In developing countries, it's especially intriguing to see the 'old and new' side by side and how the people acculturate to the changes. Each country has its different 'characteristics' and each photographer sees them differently. I've started a series on South Korea, and I plan to start one on Hong Kong. The C.O.A.C series will of course be ongoing and expanding as my career takes me to different places throughout my lifetime.

UPDATE: I paid a visit to the TIME Asia offices, and everyone was very nice. We're still waiting for my visa to work its way through the system, so hopefully in a short time I can start the internship. However, it has been nice getting to know the area and the commute I will be doing each day. It has worked out great so far, and I’m excited to start the internship because I’m itchin’ to start learning from the editors!

Good Bye California, Hello Hong Kong

For 5-months now I've been in the process of seeking out an internship as an assistant photo editor with TIME Asia. I wanted to learn the other side of photography, and I thought it would be an invaluable learning experience that would help later with my career as a photojournalist. So tomorrow, I leave for Hong Kong. The internship is for 4-months, and after that it's off to New York for a year. Most likely though, NY will be a home base. It's all up to God though, he's taken me down this path; a way I never would have imagined or planned. I don't know what the future has in store, I just know I have to go put cucumbers on my eyes because I have dark circles under them! Ciao for now...

New Look, New Images

I've been working on a new website for a couple months now, and I'm proud to say it has officially launched. I thought the hardest part would be choosing the images, however the bio never fails on being the toughest of them all. Exhibition

It was a great honor to work with Jesse Groves, the curator for the 'Observations' show, which is now up at the Brooks Rotunda Gallery. He did quick work for the short amount of time available. Luckily it went up before Christmas! If you’re in the Ventura area, stop by the Brooks campus to see my show, which is a portfolio exhibition. Also playing is the 25-minute documentary video I worked on in the rotunda. While you're in the Ventura area, stop by the Marriott Hotel to see another show; good friend of mine, Cole Eberle. It's a beautiful exhibition that was again curated by Jesse Groves. Go see them!

Tea fire

Over 1,500 acres burnt, an estimated 115 homes destroyed and 4,500 forced to flee the path of the fast moving wildfire. This terrible tragedy started on November 13 at 6:00pm and swept through the communities of Montecito and Santa Barbara. While covering the fire, I was astonished to see how fast it moved from home to home. Houses were igniting without the actual flames touching the homes because of the intense heat. The areas hit are where several of the luxuriously wealthy lived. The average home price being 2.6 million dollars.

What I saw on the first day looked like Dante's Inferno, a hell on earth. The next day was a sight to behold. It looked like several bombs were dropped because of the vast devastation that could be seen for miles around. Homes were lost, people were injured, family memories lost forever, and communities in ruins. It was a terrible tragedy that happened. The firefighters did a tremendous job fighting the fires by risking their lives saving homes and land. My prayers go out to the who lost so much in the last two days...

Prop 8: Yes or No?

Saturday night and Sunday - in the wee early morning - I was shooting the Prop 8 protests for the AP. First let me remind you that my opinions are NOT those of my clients. When I am on the clock, and further more have a camera in my hand, I do not participate in debates with subjects. I never have, and never will. I keep my opinions to myself when working, as I believe photojournalists should be non-bias in any situation while shooting, we're there to record history. However once the camera is down and your off the clock, I think it's ok to partake in discussions, respectfully.

I find it really difficult to shoot protests that are so organized. Finding photographs that are interesting in these controlled events prove difficult, at least to me. Thats when the challenge of 'finding' the images come into play. It can be fun and frustrating at the same time. At the end of the day/night when all is said and done, the best I can hope for is that I did justice by expressing the story of the subjects I photographed. Below are a few of my favorites from the protest....

Breeders Cup 08'

This past weekend I assisted Michael Burns who was part of a team shooting for Dan Dry. It was my first time at a horse race, and let me tell you, I could easily see myself going to these dressed like Roberto Hamando, the "Stay thirsty my friends" guy. What a blast that would be...

It was two long days, standing in the sun, firing the remotes. I had a good time, met some cool shooters, was taught a lot about covering horse racing, and I got one heck of a tan. I didn't have time to shoot hardly anything, I was positioned in the same place for 11 hrs. I was just snapping from the same place in between firing the remotes. So have I grown to like covering sports? Hmm, let me think about that for a little bit....

Le Twins

I was assigned really awesome subjects at the Eddie Adams Workshop. Justin and Tracy Houston of Jeffersonville, NY. No words can describe these two. There incredibly simple brothers, sharing everything from the same clothes, to the same dreams. They do everything together, and what tops their twin attitudes is, they walk at the same pace with the same steps. Amazing!

So our team topic was 'Expressions of Freedom'. And Ryan Schick, while giving me this assignment, said "No pressure or anything, but the last student to photograph these subjects got a job out of it." Yeah right, no pressure huh! I aged 3 years after that announcement...

Justin and Tracy are two twins, God bless their hearts, that live with their mom. They live a simple life, and the twins dream of leaving the town to follow their ambitions of being video gamers. They love catching dragon flies, walking up and down their backyard creek, and being around their mother, whom struggles with chronic pain. The twins stay in the trailer all day, playing online gaming so they can play with their friends that were once neighbors. Their freedom is going on long walks, reading, video games and dragon fly hunting at two ponds on the property. It's Americana with a splash of simplicity.

When all was said and done, I was blessed, honored and humbled to have won an assignment from Getty Images. So the torch is passed to the next student who will be lucky enough to have the chance of meeting Justin and Tracy, no pressure or anything... :P
